Notes from the trail

I’ve walked to Everest through different routes over the years, but the approach through Gokyo always feels distinct. The valley opens slowly, revealing turquoise lakes framed by glacial walls, and the rhythm of the trail feels quieter than the classic route.

What stands out is how perspective changes day by day. Everest appears first from unexpected angles, sometimes distant, sometimes suddenly dominant, shaping the journey long before reaching base camp itself. Crossing high passes reinforces this sense of movement across terrain rather than toward a single destination.

Moments around the Gokyo lakes linger β€” still mornings, shifting light on Cho Oyu, and ridgelines that stretch far beyond the valley. These are pauses that shape memory more than milestones.

By the time the trail reconnects with the main Everest corridor, the journey already feels complete in its own way. Base camp becomes less an endpoint and more a continuation of a story unfolding across valleys, glaciers, and quiet spaces between viewpoints.
